Abstract:
Both manufacturing and healthcare delivery systems have significant importance to economy and society. In addition to manufacturing systems, referred to as Industry 4.0, there have been growing interests in smart and interconnected healthcare systems, where we introduce the notion of Healthcare 4.0. In this talk, we will present the lessons we learned and results we obtained during the journey from manufacturing system research to healthcare delivery system study. We will address the evolution of Industry 4.0 and Healthcare 4.0, discuss the similarities and differences between production systems and healthcare delivery systems, and introduce the difficulties and opportunities. Next, a brief description of recent studies carried out at the Production and Service Systems Lab in University of Wisconsin-Madison will be described. Finally, we plan to discuss the challenges and future directions in smart and interconnected manufacturing and healthcare systems research.
