Biography
Dr. Hareesh Godaba is a Lecturer (Assistant Professor) in the Department of Engineering and Design at the University of Sussex. He received his Ph.D. from the National University of Singapore (NUS) in 2018 and B.Tech. (Hons.) from IIT Bhubaneswar in 2013. Prior to joining the University of Sussex, he worked as a postdoctoral researcher in Queen Mary University of London (QMUL) and NUS. His work has been published in reputed venues such as Nature Materials, Nature Biomedical Engineering, Soft Matter, Applied Physics Letters and IEEE/ASME Trans. on Mechatronics, and has been covered in international media including Reuters (UK) and Straits Times (Singapore). He has been a part of the successful organisation of IEEE ICRA 2023 as the Competitions Chair. His research focuses on investigating the intersection of functional materials, applied mechanics, and bioinspiration to develop intelligent soft robots and devices to tackle significant challenges in industrial and biomedical applications.
Abstract
Nature with its multitude of forms and species is a great source of inspiration for engineering. The biological muscles in humans, bioluminescence in octopus, and adhesive feet in lizards all provide insights into new technologies that can be created to enable a range of applications. The recent advances in soft active materials offer us the opportunity to develop technologies that enable us to replicate what we see in nature and unravel new applications. In this talk, I will discuss my experiences in developing and investigating fundamental soft material technologies such as dielectric elastomer artificial muscles, self-healing electroluminescent devices and controllable electroadhesion for application to robotics. Further, I will show our recent work on applying soft robotic technologies to tackle outstanding challenges of manipulation and grasping in extreme environments.
