Prof. Hu is a Fellow of Institute of Engineering & Technology, a Fellow of Institute of Measurement & Control, and a founding member of IEEE Robotics & Automation Society Technical committee on Networked Robots. He has been a Program Chair or a member of Advisory/Organising Committee for many international conferences such as IEEE IROS, ICRA, ICMA, ROBIO conferences. He is currently Editor-in-Chief for International Journal of Automation and Computing, Editor-in-Chief for MDPI Robotics Journal, and Executive Editor for International Journal of Mechatronics & Automation.
Abstract
Cloud computing provides abundant resources and computing power, which is the Internet based computing infrastructure. It enables today's AI algorithms and intelligent robots to service us everywhere, namely cloud AI and robotics. Through wired or wireless networks, AI algorithms and autonomous robots can access cheap and readily available information in the cloud and receive commands via communication networks for their remote operation. The system reliability can be guaranteed so that AI algorithms and autonomous robots in the cloud can be accessed by their users 24 hours a day and 7 days a week with minimum maintenance. In this talk, I will briefly overview the key challenges and opportunities of cloud AI and robotic systems in real-world applications. In particular, the recent development of tele-healthcare, remote environment monitoring and swarm robotics at Essex is introduced, and some preliminary results are demonstrated via video.
