Recently, jointly evaluated by the Sino-German Science Center of National Natural Science Foundation and the German Science Foundation (DFG), a Sino-German Cooperative Research Group for“Advanced Cooling Technology and Gas Turbine Performance" was approved. This project is led by Prof. Yu Rao in School of Mechanical Engineering, Shanghai Jiao Tong University, with Prof. Bernhard Weigand (academician of German Academy of Engineering) in the University of Stuttgart. The Sino-German Cooperative Research Group is the first project approved by China and Germany in the field of gas turbine and aero-engine. It includes the Chinese partner of Prof. Zhang Huisheng from Institute of Turbomachinery of School of Mechanical Engineering, Shanghai Jiao Tong University, and the German partner of Prof. Stephan Staudacher (academician of German Academy of Engineering) from the aero-engine research institute (ILA) of the University of Stuttgart.

The long-term international academic exchanges and in-depth research cooperation will be carried out in the fields of gas turbine/aero-engine hot components cooling and engine performance. This project will cover the fundamental researches on advanced cooling technologies, the performance test and modeling analysis for small gas turbine/aero-engines, as well as the exchange visits between young scholars of both sides.

The Sino-German Cooperative Research Group is a key international cooperative project jointly funded by the National Natural Science Foundation of China and the German scientific research association. Since its established in 2001, 2-3 projects have been approved each year. So far, about 40 projects have been approved and funded in various research fields.
